Sunburns and Mosquitoes and Water Danger, OH MY! Five Fab Favorites for a Safe Summer

Note: See Tami demonstrate these five summer safety products on KWGN CW2.

I LOVE summer.

Enjoying food, fun, friends and family by a fire pit. Swimming more hours in a day than there are days in the week. Riding bikes until the sun goes down. Witnessing the kids try new activities, meet new friends, as they grow and improve each day.

But summer does bring its hazards.  Here are five of my favorite things to keep families safe in the sunshine.

Sport-Brella Chair
For three soccer seasons, one baseball season, and several trips to the swimming pool, I have taken my Sport-Brella everywhere. It has proven to be light, handy, durable, and a provider of shade in an instant. Sport-Brella slung over one shoulder and fold-up chair over the other, imagine my excitement when I found out Sport-Brella made a chair that includes an umbrella, in one handy carrying bag!

The Sport-Brella Chair is AWESOME. It is a portable fold-up sport chair, but unlike others, it has an attached swivel umbrella which can be moved from one side of the chair to the other and can be swiveled at 3 different points at the push of a button. It provides complete coverage from the sun and wind at any conceivable angle. It sets up and takes down fast enough to beat any Colorado rain storm, and tucks into a carrying bag that slings over my shoulder. The Sport-Brella Chair has a built-in cup holder, bottle opener and handy pouch where I keep my mobile phone. $39.99-$64.99

Safety Turtle
Babies and water can be a deadly combination. In the blink of an eye, a beautiful, peaceful afternoon can become a tragic catastrophe. If you have a baby (or a pet), or a pool or boat, Safety Turtle could be a literal life saver.

The Safety Turtle Wireless Wristband Alarm fastens securely to baby (or pet). If the baby wearing the wireless signal-outfitted wristband encounters water, an alarm instantly sounds at the wireless base station receiver, before it is too late. The base station can be positioned anywhere between pool/waterside and 200 feet away (depending on model desired).

ThermaCELL Outdoor Lantern
If there is a mosquito within 372 yards, it will find me and suck my blood like a hungry vampire. Yet I hate dowsing myself and my family with bug spray. Yuck! At a recent soccer tournament, no less than 9 mosquitoes penetrated my skin and enjoyed my juice. I itched for days!

Too bad I didn't yet know about the ThermaCELL Outdoor Insect-Repellent Lantern, which would have provided the other soccer families and me a 15x15 foot mosquito-free zone. The Patio Lantern is both a powerful insect repellent device and a functional and portable, long-lasting outdoor LED lantern, with both functions being usable separately or together. The Department of Defense and the United States Army say it is the 98% effective, and that is good enough for me. Unlike smelly bug spray, The Patio Lantern is non-toxic, safe and non-intrusive, being DEET-free, silent, portable and odor free.
$31.99

Aquajogger Junior
As a mom, Body-for-LIFE Champion, and coach of more than 2,000 children (18 months to 18 years), I am a fan of anything that puts the fun in fitness. And of all of those kids I coach, I every one I've asked loves to swim. When you add a fitness tool to an activity kids already love to do, you have a recipe for children to learn how to love being active throughout their lifetimes.

The AquaJogger Junior allows children 3+ to learn to swim, play water games and have fitness fun. Worn like a belt, The Aquajogger Junior comfortably suspends the child wearing it at shoulder level in deep water allowing her/him to breathe normally and move freely while performing a wide variety of water activities. Easy to use and comfortable, the AquaJogger Junior comes with the Splash Club Handbook, which is full of fun in-the-pool activities for your child and his or her friends, as well as swimming tips and safety information. $24.95

Peekaru Ozone
One of the most common warnings from pediatricians is for children to avoid sun exposure. But nobody likes to spray the chemicals in sunscreen on an infant. Parents must either drape babies with bulky blankets, or avoid the sun altogether.

Enter the Peekaru Ozone, which lets a parent take his or her baby out in the sunshine without worrying about sun damage or having to apply chemical sunscreens. Uniquely breathable and lightweight, this sun cover attaches securely over any soft baby carrier, car seat or stroller, keeping baby shaded and cool. The super soft fabric blocks 95% of the sun's UVA and UVB rays while keeping baby cool and comfortable. Fits babies from birth through two years with an adjustable bottom that easily and securely cinches up for use with small babies, and lets out to accommodate babies' legs as they grow.

The Sport-Brella chair looks interesting...as does the aquajogger.

I am skeptical of the mosquito repellant. Mosquitoes don't bother me too much, since my husband and daughter make much more tasty targets. I'd like to see something take out the mosquitoes, since we can't enjoy the back yard much at all.

I definitely want to try that aquajogger! Our number one safety must for summer is sunscreen! Apply often and liberally!

The Sport-Brella Chair looks so awesome and the shelters on their site are pretty cool too. I'm checking them out now.

Our tip for staying safe in the summer is sunscreen and making sure we have a bottle or spray in lots of different places like the car and a backpack.

I would LOVE the mosquito repellent lamp - that is my absolute worst thing about summer is all the bites my kids are getting lately. To stay safe - lately it means staying inside during dusk because of all those dang bugs.

I love your reviews - all the products look great. My summer safety tip is SUNSCREEN! Apply often and keep a little bottle of it everywhere, in your purse, car, soccer bag...
