C'mon Feel the Noise (with your big ol' 80s hair)

Riddle me this.

What new Broadway musical soundtrack...
  • Has a cadence so much like Rent that I had to check the libretto to see if Mark, Roger and Mimi were singing?
  • Is like MammaMia!, in that the story was written around a collection of songs, rather than the other way around?
  • Is like Footloose in that The Mayor is trying to take away something edgy (rock vs dancing) from the youth of the city?
  • Makes you want to get out your big hair and tease it up to the ceiling while you air guitar to The Final Countdown (which will forever conjure Gob from Arrested Development)?
That's right, boys and girls, it's Rock of Ages, starring the voice of Constantine Maroulis, American Idol finalist (I've never watched, so this might be more impressive to you than it is to me).

Upfront disclaimer: Through the One2One Network, I received a CD ($12 value) for purposes of sharing my honest opinion.

Promotional material reads:
"Rock of Ages is the new Broadway musical... set in 1987 in a legendary Sunset Strip rock club, a small-town girl meets a big-city dreamer and they fall in love to the greatest metal songs of the 80's. The musical is an arena-rock love story told through the mind-blowing, face-melting hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Poison, Asia, Whitesnake, and more."
Click here for the track list. Lots to love on it.

The voices are wonderfully plaintive, the music driving, and there are moments of humor in the script. I also enjoyed the memories of various dance floors in my college town, evoked by the reworked songs.

My only ding is the lack of originality. While enjoyable enough to listen to, the soundtrack sounds just a little too familiar.

Which, when it comes to the 80s, isn't a bad thing. I *heart* the 80s. Those were some mighty fine dance floors.

What's your favorite 80s song? Hit me with your best shot.

I have fond memories of the '80s! I can't believe it's been 25+ years. YIKES!

Great review...I'll have to tease and hairspray my (big) hair and check it out.

I can't pick just one '80s song to love. I just can't! '80s music is a bit like crack to me.

I'm most definitely a child of the 80s, and there's no way I could pick a single favorite song!

Well I guess it would be nice
If I could touch your body
I know not everybody
Has got a body like you

But I've got to think twice
Before I give my heart away
And I know all the games you play
Because I play them too

Oh but I
Need some time off from that emotion
Time to pick my heart up off the floor
And when that love comes down
Without devotion
Well it takes a strong man baby
But I'm showing you the door

'Cause I gotta have faith...

Baby
I know you're asking me to stay
Say please, please, please, don't go away
You say I'm giving you the blues
Maybe
You mean every word you say
Can't help but think of yesterday
And another who tied me down to loverboy rules

Before this river
Becomes an ocean
Before you throw my heart back on the floor
Oh baby I reconsider
My foolish notion
Well I need someone to hold me
But I'll wait for something more

Yes I've gotta have faith...

Thanks for this! I'll have to check it out.

I'm 80's hair metal all the way. My 2009 Def Leppard Bonanza starts next Wednesday . . . I can hardly wait!

And I'm so glad I married such an understanding husband.
